Doula??? What is that?

Growing up, I knew I wanted to be an Ob/Gyn. I didn't really care for the Gyn part of the abbreviation, but I was in love with childbirth. I had my life planned out... I was going to follow the path to medical school, which would lead to my dream of delivering babies. That is until I went to medical camp one summer. The camp showed us what it would be like to be a student in all the various medical programs. All I got from it was new friendships and the knowledge that I'd have to work with cadavers to get my degree. That was it for me! I'm NOT working with corpses to bring life into the world! So, I landed in the field of engineering and didn't look back.

Fast forward thirteen years and I'm feeling unfilled at my work-from-home job and wondering how do I make my passion a reality. I start looking into nursing and midwifery because those corpses are still very unappealing. In my search, I come across a bunch of women saying they are doulas.

Doula??? What is that? How do I even pronounce it? Why would I want to be one? So I begin researching like a madwoman... A |doo-luh| is a trained professional who provides non-judgmental physical, emotional, and educational support to families before, during, and after childbirth. The word doula is a Greek word meaning "women's servant." Doulas are not new, they're just becoming more popular. Women have been serving others in childbirth since the beginning of time. A doula is not a doctor (no corpses, yay!) or midwife, they do nothing medically; their purpose is to help women have a safe, empowering, and memorable birthing experience. THIS! This is what I want to do! I could feel in my spirit that this is where my purpose and passion would come together.

As with everything else in my life, I jumped in with both feet and no life jacket. In just a short amount of time, I was trained, certified, and taking clients. Next to marriage and kids, this has been the single, most gratifying experience of my life. Not only am I living out my dreams, but I'm being given the amazing honor and privilege to provide an unforgettable service to women and families.
